DESCRIPTION:Smith Street\n\n\n\nA choice of two guided walk dates are available \n\n\n\nSunday 28 April\, 2pm – 4:30pm. repeated on Sunday 19 May 2024\, 2pm – 4:30pm \n\n\n\nPlease note that this event is limited to 15 people. You can register for the second of walk. \n\n\nA guided walk to flesh out the characters\, places and events that contributeto our heritage of Smith Street\, Summer Hill. This event is part of theAustralian Heritage Festival for 2024. \n \nThe history beneath the surface of Smith Street is extraordinary. Thiswalking tour will uncover the natural features of the landscape\, which by the1880s became the site for a late-Victorian building boom.  How did the newsubdivisions respond to the landscape\, and who were the first urban landownersand residents?  Was Summer Hill the domain of the fashionable well-to-do\,or the labouring class\, or both? Why? The shops\, the halls\, the churches andthe meeting venues\, the factories\, the houses and the duplexes are still activeand visible today\, and yet the pressure for change remains strong. The story ofSmith Street gives us a great insight into the complex nature of Summer Hilland Inner West society of today. \n \nMeeting location at the park on the corner of Malthouse Way andSmith Street\, Summer Hill. \n \nPrior registration is essential and limited to a maximum of 15 people perevent. (A waiting list will be compiled if registrations exceed our maximumlimit). \n \nPlease bring a hat\, a drink and good walking shoes
