DESCRIPTION:Start location = The Bruce Street Reserve at the corner of Elizabeth St and Liverpool Road. \n\n\n\nMany members were disappointed at missing out on the first walking tour so Kerry has agreed to repeat of the March 22 walk. Please register for this event. \n\n\n\nMembers\, especially those who attended Kerry’s presentation at the AGM of her book “Early Settlers\, Speculators and Houses” will have the opportunity of visiting this fascinating small Heritage Conservation Area under guidance of the author\, a resident and passionate advocate of its history. Blocks from the sale of part of the Canterbury Estate in 1841 were eagerly bought up by a mix of characters\, many with interesting pasts\, several with significant futures. Erected on these blocks were some of the earliest houses\, over a decade before the railway was constructed. \n\n\n\nThe buildings remaining from this early activity are complemented by a mostly harmonious group of well-designed and built properties\, some sympathetically maintained by proud owners. \n\n\n\nA fascinating enclave in the middle of bustling modern Ashfield. \n\n\n\n$5 Cash only on the day

DESCRIPTION:Joint Function – Ashfield and Burwood District Historical Societies \n\n\n\n\n\nThe guided walk will be led by John Johnson\, Vice President of Burwood and District Historical Society. John has written a book about the history of the Malvern Hill estate which is shortly to be published. \n\n\n\nCroydon falls into 2 local government areas – Inner West (incorporating the former Ashfield Municipality) and Burwood Local Government areas. Although administration is separate\, the suburb is seen as one place for its identity\, functions and history. For instance\, the Gads Hill Conservation Area (Inner West) adjoins Malvern Hill\, the subject of this walk. Malvern Hill was a later subdivision which was planned in accordance with the Local Government Act introduced in 1906. Principally a residential area\, it was seen as a desirable place to live and features Federation and Californian Bungalow architectural styles. \n\n\n\nThe ADHS publication\, Journal 18 -Croydon in Focus\, can provide you with more insights into the suburb of Croydon. \n\n\n\nMeeting Place: The small park/playground behind the Old Croydon Post Office (now the Adora Chocolate shop)\, The Strand Croydon. \n\n\n\nBring – any snacks and water you think you will need (there is no refreshment facility apart from the shops on The Strand). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCroydon Post Office \n\n\n\nRegistration via the website. SUMMARY:Exploring the Italianate Style and its Origins.
DESCRIPTION:The Italianate style was a very popular housing style in Ashfield and throughout much of the inner west of Sydney during the 1880s through to 1900. Why was this style so popular? What is Italian about the Italianate? How did the style originate and how did it arrive in the Sydney suburbs?This presentation will examine not only the key characteristics of this unique and appealing style\, but will also explore the style’s origins in the UK\, and how it arrived in Australia.This presentation will combine a short local walk with a colourful Powerpoint presentation. It will expose the key characteristics of the Italianate style\, its defining characteristics\, its variations\, and how people have adapted the style to suit their individual needs.The talk begins at 3pm\, and will include a presentation with extensive examples of the style and the key milestones in the development of the style.For those interested\, at 2pm there will be an optional short walk around the meeting venue to examine first-hand some examples of the Italianate style\, as a prelude to the main presentation. \n\n\n\nItalianate Terraces\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick on ‘Google Map’ to see the venue.
