SUMMARY:"Connections\, Characters and Commerce"– Smith Street Summer Hill #3
DESCRIPTION:Each person registering for this event must register individually. This will help us keep limits on the number of people attending. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nA guided walk to flesh out the characters\, places and events that contribute to our heritage of Smith Street\, Summer Hill. This event is part of the Australian Heritage Festival for 2024. \n\n\n\nThe history beneath the surface of Smith Street is extraordinary. This walking tour will uncover the natural features of the landscape\, which by the 1880s became the site for a late-Victorian building boom.  How did the new subdivisions respond to the landscape\, and who were the first urban landowners and residents?  Was Summer Hill the domain of the fashionable well-to-do\, or the labouring class\, or both? Why? The shops\, the halls\, the churches and the meeting venues\, the factories\, the houses and the duplexes are still active and visible today\, and yet the pressure for change remains strong. The story of Smith Street gives us a great insight into the complex nature of Summer Hill and Inner West society of today. \n\n\n\nMeeting location at the park on the corner of Malthouse Way and Smith Street\, Summer Hill. \n\n\n\nPrior registration is essential and limited to a maximum of 15 people per event. (A waiting list will be compiled if registrations exceed our maximum limit). \n\n\n\nPlease bring a hat\, a drink and good walking shoes.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Italianate Style and its Origins.
DESCRIPTION:The Italianate style was a very popular housing style in Ashfield and throughout much of the inner west of Sydney during the 1880s through to 1900. Why was this style so popular? What is Italian about the Italianate? How did the style originate and how did it arrive in the Sydney suburbs? This presentation will examine not only the key characteristics of this unique and appealing style\, but will also explore the style’s origins in the UK\, and how it arrived in Australia. This presentation will combine a short local walk with a colourful Powerpoint presentation. It will expose the key characteristics of the Italianate style\, its defining characteristics\, its variations\, and how people have adapted the style to suit their individual needs. The talk begins at 3pm\, and will include a presentation with extensive examples of the style and the key milestones in the development of the style. For those interested\, at 2pm there will be an optional short walk around the meeting venue to examine first-hand some examples of the Italianate style\, as a prelude to the main presentation. \n\n\n\nItalianate Terraces\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick on ‘Google Map’ to see the venue.
