SUMMARY:A Walk Through London Streets in Search of the Origin of our Victorian Italianate Legacy; a presentation by Mark Sabolch
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed.\n\n\n\nIn this pictorial presentation Mark will explore the varied examples of the Italianate architectural style as seen in London. \n\n\n\nThe Italianate style was very popular and versatile. Taking in the housing forms seen around Regents Park\, Belgravia\, Pimlico and Bloomsbury just after the turn of the nineteenth century and evolving as new estates extended into the Victorian growth areas in London’s south-east and north-west suburbs. \n\n\n\nTo what extent are the Victorian Italianate house styles we see in the Inner West derived from London housing? Mark will explore how the Victorian Italianate style evolved and consider possible translations from London to Sydney. This is a combined event of Ashfield and District Historical Society and Marrickville Heritage Society.

SUMMARY:The connection between Ashfield\, Summer Hill\, the rabbit plagues\, and the Australian Steel Industry
DESCRIPTION:Ashfield\, Summer Hill\, and the Rabbit Plague \n\n\n\nFor over 100 years\, the Lysaght Wire Mill at Chiswick produced most of Australia’s fencing materials\, significantly the wire netting of which thousands of Kilometres was used in rabbit-control fencing\, in a never-quite-successful attempt to eradicate these cute\, fluffy introduced creatures which were determined to destroy our farming industry.Ashfield and Summer Hill\, perhaps surprisingly\, played a part in the battle to control the burgeoning population of these pests\, being heavily involved in the distribution of Lysaght’s products throughout Australia during much of last century.Much of engineer Brian Gray’s working life was spent in this industry\, and his travels and experiences facilitating effective use of these products in the unending pursuit of the pesky rabbits provide him with much to tell us about this phase of our local history.

SUMMARY:History Week: The Federation House – Where it really Came From\, by Mark Sabolch
DESCRIPTION:The Ashfield and District Historical Society invites you to join us for this informative talk at the Summer Hill Community Centre\, 131 Smith Street\, Summer Hill. \n\n\n\nIts sometimes said that the Federation period house is Australia’s own style. But is it really? \n\n\n\nThis illustrated talk will explore the origins of the Federation period house\, so prevalent in the Ashfield district. \n\n\n\nThe house style that had been previously popular was the Victorian Italianate. However\, by 1895 there were significant cultural changes that that promoted new ways of looking at the world\, and the idea of Federation was only one of them. Mark’s talk will explore the cultural and social influences that drove an evolution in house style away from the Italianate style. \n\n\n\nWho were some of the key people that shaped public opinion at this time? \n\n\n\nMark Sabolch is a long-standing member of the Ashfield and District Historical Society and author of the ‘Hawthorne Canal – the History of Long Cove Creek’ published in 2004. Recently Mark has been researching the origins of the architectural house styles prevalent in Sydney’s inner west.

SUMMARY:How did the small mid-19th century mining town of Burra in the Clare Valley district of South Australia\, largely abandoned well over 100 years ago\, come to represent some of the most significant advances in heritage preservation in Australia\, and indeed World-wide ?
DESCRIPTION:Dr Bronwyn Hanna will share some of her extensive knowledge of this subject in describing the background\, and explaining why the Charter has been so influential\, along with insights into the broader history of heritage practices in Australia. \n\n\n\nThe Burra Charter evolved from a meeting of the Australian chapter of the United Nations-sponsored International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1979 and is internationally influential in providing standard guidelines for heritage conservation practice \n\n\n\nDr Bronwyn Hanna is a heritage consultant who trained as an Australianarchitectural historian at the University of Sydney\, completed a PhD on the history of women architects in NSW in 1999 at UNSW\, and co-authored two books on the topic. She has worked for government\, industry and community groups on many heritage places including the Sydney Opera House\, the Parramatta Female Factory and the Brewarrina Fish Traps.
