SUMMARY:Save Our Sirius: Shaun Carter
DESCRIPTION:Following the Annual General Meeting\, Shaun Carter will talk to us about the Sirius apartment building in Millers Point and other heritage matters. We have all heard about the NSW government’s action to have the Sirius building demolished – some people thinking it’s a good idea\, others not. However\, the idea that a building containing 79 apartments will be demolished to build a huge block of 250 apartments (possibly 30-storeys) is not appealing to most. Shaun will tell us about his research into the history and significance of the Sirius building\, including the Green Ban movement and Jack Mundey’s involvement. He will put forward his understanding of the building\, its place in the urban environment and the fight to have it saved. Shaun is a passionate speaker on the Sirius and other heritage issues and this is a great opportunity for members and friends to hear the inside story. \nThe Sirius Building

SUMMARY:The 50 Year History of the Polish Community in Ashfield
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Polish Club have agreed to host members and friends of our Society to a special afternoon at their Club where Eva Habijanec and other members will talk about how a large number of ‘displaced’ Polish people gathered post-war to live near to Ashfield in the late 1940s and 50s and finally established the Polish Club.  Eva’s parents came to Australia separately from Poland and Siberia.  Her father initially worked on the Snowy Mountains Scheme and her mother worked at Kims on the Beach at Toowoon Bay before they met and married.  Please take a close look at the photograph to see if you can identify anyone.  Halina and current members of the Polish Club have a few names but would like to know more.  If you can help please let her know at the upcoming function or email us adhs@tpg.com.au with the information.  Thank you in advance. \nPolish-Community-1951-St-Vincents-Church-in-Bland-Street-Photio-supplied-by-Halina-Dallas-one-of-the-three-little-girls-in-the-front-row.
