Smith Street Project
ADHS is pursuing a project exploring and documenting the history, heritage and character of Smith Street and the Summer Hill village.
The Ashfield Heritage Study (1993) discusses the formal heritage buildings in Smith Street as follows (in summary):
- The group of houses at 192-200 Smith St: Form a very good component of the streetscape at the high end of Smith Street. The subsequent ownerships and tenancies are interesting.
- The group of houses at 176-184 Smith St: A group of five distinctive Federation period houses made important by their siting, similarity, design, quality and intactness.
- 139 Smith St: A large and pleasant house with abundant and varied stucco embellishment including an unusual parapet bay.
- 168 Smith St: An impressive and unusual example of late Inter-War architecture displaying interesting Functionialist and Art Deco elements. Positive streetscape.
- 164 Smith St: Interesting example of the Californian Bungalow style; it adds variety to streetscape.
- 112-128 Smith St: Suite of shops & dwellings, notable for their stylistic detailing, for their evocation of turn of the century commerce in Summer Hill, considerable streetscape importance.
However, we are interested in the views of the residents, homeowners, shop keepers, the shoppers, the locals! We invite your views.
We are interested in collecting and collating the views of local people living or working in the Summer Hill village. What do you think about the character of your area?
Do you have any stories or memories of the area?
